Saint Goar !

St. Goar am Rhein, what a wonderful village!!!

Date - April 15th, 2000

One of our last hoorahs before coming home! We decided at the last minute to stay in this incredible village the weekend of April 15th, 2000. We stayed at the Castle Rheinfels, as it is now a four-star hotel. Our room had windows looking both North and South on the Rhein. It was incredible staring out the opened windows watching the barges move up and down the River, and hearing the toll of the church bells on the hour.

A little history of the village...St. Goar is on the left bank of the Rhein in the Loreley Valley. The ancient fortress ruins of Rheinfels towers over the village. The village is named after the monk and missionary, Goar. He established a hospice and sanctuary here in the 6th century, as well as the church. Throughout its existence, the fortress has adapted to the economic needs of the area. The castle came under attack several time over several decades, but was never taken until 1794 when General von Resius yielded the fort to the French occupying forces without resistance. Today the fort is owned by the village of St. Goar and opened to visitors.

We had great fun relaxing and taking a self-guided tour of the ruins and the castle itself. It was a great end to almost two years of living in Germany.
