The Brothers Grimm Trail!

A map of the Fairy Tail road

Brothers Grimm trail from Kässel to Hamlin, Germany!!!

Date - November 12 - 14, 1999

A poem that was left for us in our room at the Dornroeschenschloss:

Herbst, von Theodor Storm

Schon ins Land der Pyramiden
flohn die Storche ubers Meer;
Schwalbenflucht ist langst geschieden,
auch die Lerche singt nicht mehr.

Seufzend in geheimer Klange
streift der Wind das letzte Grun;
und die sussen Sommertage,
auch sie sind dahin, dahin!

Nebel hat den Wald verschlungen,
der dein stillstes Gluck gesehn;
ganz in Duft und Dammerungen
will die schone Welt vergehn.

Nur noch einmal bricht die Sonne
unaufhaltsam durch den Duft,
und ein Strahl der alten Wonne
rieselt uber Tal und Kluft.

Und es leuchten Wald und Heide,
dass man sicher glauben mag,
hinter allem Winterleide
lieg' ein ferner Fruhlingstag.

We took a three day trip to the Brothers Grimm area. We started the trip in Kässel, where the Grimm brothers grew up, and wondered the city a little. While there, we toured the Brothers Grimm museum and visited the Astronomy museum that was contained in a huge, old palace in a huge park. From there, we traveled along the Weser river. The drive was the most beautiful fall drive we have ever taken. The drive is between a very thick forest of all kinds of trees and the river. We parked and toured the small town of Hess. Münden. This town has the most beautiful timbered homes that we have ever seen. The timbers that separate each floor were all intricately carved with designs and with the history of the building.

From there we continued our drive along the Weser until we left the river to the town of Sababurg. Located in Sababurg, is the castle of Dornroeschenschloss , which is the castle on which the Sleeping Beauty story is based.  We were able to get their last available room, and spent the night. This was our first stay in a "real" castle and we had a wonderful time. We enjoyed a four-course meal of local specialties.

We started dinner with a drink called the "Fairy Tale" - gin, apricot liquor, and a dry Riesling.

Dinner started with a smoked salmon plate followed by a mushroom torte and a salad.  We were then served the most incredible beet soup with horse radish dumplings.  The main course was leg of deer medallions with a mushroom sauce, a cabbage casserole, and a brie and carrot cranberry sauce spetzel.  It was outstanding!

The next day we continued our trip through the forest and along the river. In Furstenberg we visited the oldest porcelain factory in Germany. They had an extensive museum on the making and the history of their porcelain and needless to say, we did some shopping. From there, we continued our trip to Hamlin. We are happy to announce that we saw no rats! However, the town seemed to have very few children and we were told that the Pied Piper had recently left!

We spent the night there and continued on the next day to Ösnabruck, where it had been reported that there was a Taco Bell! Having been starved of decent Mexican food for almost two years, we had to try our best to find "The Bell". Half an hour later we still hadn't found it, so we left gravely disappointed and headed for Münsterland. The area around Münster is full of Wasserschlossen (water castles). These are castles that have water moats. In the area around Münster, the land is so flat that there are no hills to build a castle on, therefore, they built water moats around them. We were able to visit four of the castles before we had to head home.
